Hamburg is a major port city located in Germany and the city itself has not only seen its fair share of history but that history has divided the city into neatly organized towns where each area offers a new and rewarding experience.
For instance you can take a ride or a walk around Alster Lake and see some of the finest parks and buildings in the area. The city also offers several canals that have lent Hamburg a fond nickname of the "Venice of the North."
Take a moment to watch the Hamburg Travel Video above and get an idea of just a few of the great things to experience here.
That being said, there are clear contrasts all around as you explore the various parts of this fascinating city. Steel and glass skyscrapers are the hallmark of this modern city but they sit alongside old churches and fish markets that give this city a distinctly unique charm.
There is a method and reason for this varying infrastructure though and most of it stems back to the various hardships that the city has endured through its 1,200 year history.
In World War II the city was almost completely demolished by bombs and invading forces, but out of that rubble and destruction came a larger and much more beautiful city.
If you have an emergency while in the city dial 110 for the police and dial 112 to report a fire or call for an ambulance.
